ABC Shines Bright on Main Street

"No one even knew the business was still open
when I bought it in March, 2000," explains Rick
Kappa, owner of ABC Storage at 3240-44 Main
and member of MainCor. "The north building was
boarded up. There was old graffiti on the building,
the painted signs had faded. The Midtown Marketplace
site was being cleared and there was a pack of 13 wild
dogs scavenging the grounds."
This is how Kappa described the area at Linwood and
Main when he first purchased ABC Storage a few short
years ago. "I knew if I was going to get new customers,
things would have to change."
Enter MainCor. "I was invited to a MainCor business
lunch and I soon realized this was a place where I could
find the help I needed." With dogged determination,
Kappa marketed his business to new customers. It wasn't
easy at first because people new to the area were sometimes
approached by panhandlers
With dogged determination, Kappa marketed his business
to new customers. It wasn't easy at first because people
new to the area were sometimes approached by panhandlers
and even prostitutes. Remember, this was prior to Midtown
Marketplace.
After a while, Kappa worked with MainCor staff and
applied for the Facade Rebate Program. With that help,
he was able to make repairs and repaint the 3240 Main
building. No longer a boarded up building, it now adds
character to Main Street.
Thanks
Just a note to thank everyone I've
worked with during my time at MainCor. I learned a lot
during the last ten years about the strength and tenacity
of the people who live and work in Midtown and, specifically,
on the best corridor in Kansas City - Main Street!
Many blessings to all of you,
Clara

Volume 10, Issue 4
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
(CPTED) Class in Kansas City
The conceptual thrust of the CPTED program is that
the proper design and effective use of the physical
environment can produce behavioral effects that will
reduce the incidence and fear of crime, thereby improving
the quality of community life. These behavioral effects
can be accomplished by reducing the potential of the
physical environment to support criminal behavior.
Some strategies are:
- Provide clear border definition of controlled space
- Provide clearly marked transitional zones, which
indicate movement from public to semi-public to private
space
- Relocate gathering areas to locations with natural
surveillance and access control, or to locations away
from the view of would-be offenders
- Redesign or revamp space to increase the perception
or reality of natural surveillance
If you would like to learn more about CPTED, the
Missouri Crime Prevention is presenting a 40-hour
class from Sept. 26 through 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily,

Crow, a criminologist specializing in CPTED, has trained
