Midtown is About to Get an Exceptional New High School

Cristo Rey Kansas City (CRKC) is a unique model of high school education will be opening with a class of 100 freshmen in the fall of 2006. It is located at Redemptorist Parish at Linwood Boulevard and Broadway. The high school is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, the twelfth school to join the Cristo Rey Network™.

The mission of Cristo Rey Kansas City is to provide a Catholic, college prep education enhanced by an innovative corporate work-study program to culturally diverse students with economic need.

Students of all faith traditions are welcome. The curriculum is designed for students who dream of attending college but may not have the means to do so. Students will take classes in English, mathematics, Spanish, science, social studies, religion and fine arts. The education CRKC students receive will meet or exceed admission requirements for most colleges and universities. CRKC students share a common motivation to succeed, and with tutoring and learning resources provided, many students will achieve their dream to attend and graduate from college.

While Cristo Rey students do take classes and have assignments just like all their peers, they also work 40 hours a month to help finance their education. This is the most cutting-edge aspect of CRKC. Teams of four students share a full-time, entry-level position in fields such as law, engineering, social services, publishing, health care and accounting. Their jobs will include duties as filing, copying, billing, data entry, mailroom tasks and answering phones.

The salaries earned from these positions will offset approximately 65% of the cost of educating the Cristo Rey student. The remaining costs will be met through tuition, scholarships and fundraising.

The positions aren't simply internships-they are real jobs with regular business hours and salaries that are applied towards the cost of education. Students don't just work at their jobs and attend school-what they learn at work integrates with the curriculum. Students are thoroughly prepared to become successful in the corporate environment. Before the school year begins, they have an intensive three-week training program which includes seminars covering team building, professional dress, business etiquette and computer skills. There has long been a need for a school like CRKC in Kansas City, and the community response has been enthusiastic. Thirty-one area businesses have signed letters of intent to provide jobs for the inaugural freshman class, and momentum continues to build. Local companies are excited about the prospect of adding young and dynamic employees to their staff and mentoring the next generation of Kansas City professionals.

CRKC serves the greater Kansas City area. It is an affordable alternative for urban families who want a quality education for their children. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches are eligible to apply to CRKC. Other families with economic need may contact the school to see if they are eligible.

For more information about Cristo Rey Kansas City or if you are interested in sponsoring a team of student workers, please call the school at (816) 457-6044 or email the school at info@cristoreykc.org.

Hey, What is Going on on Main Street?

Diane Burnette wants everyone to know what's going on from 27th to 47th. Main Street is not only important to property & the business owners, but to all the residents in the corridor, and to all who seek the wellbeing of Kansas City. After all this is Kansas City's STREET. Following is a list of what's happening:

  • The Federal Reserve Bankconstruction is underway, scheduled to complete construction in spring 2008.
  • Katie's Canine Resortmoved to Main Street.
  • 31st and Main, the Southtown(Tax Increment Financing) a potential developerlooking into redevelopment with a mixed use community, hotel and a tower building of condominiums.
  • Buttonwood Financial has purchased property and consolidated offices.
  • The Children's Center for the Vision Impaired owns property near the Contract Furnishing. It is suggested that the area might be developed into a pocket park for the children or nice green space, any suggestions?
  • Main Street Chevrolet has closed. The Fisher family, still own the land and buildings, it is understood that they are looking for another car dealer but may we suggest a mixed use building approach.
  • ABC Storage has a very nicely restored lit sign, funded by the Façade Rebate Program.
  • A new building has been built on the south end of the Midtown Market Place and some of the new tenant's are Lamar's Doughnuts (different owner from the Linwood store) and Verizon Wireless and a Jackson Hewitt.
  • A new building owner on the East side of the 3400 block is making all kinds of façade improvements and has even planted trees. On the west side of the 3400 block the owner participated in the Façade Rebate Program and has made some improvements, both are looking for good tenants, not a payday loan.
  • There is a new radio show being broadcast at the Berry Recording Studio located on the corner of 36th Street.
  • A touch south on the Westside of the 3600 block, a new property owner Troy Covey of Solomon's Porch at 36th and Walnut has purchased a building and wants more. He has plans for a possible a Youth Development Center.
  • The African Market is expanding and opening the African Café.
  • The Rent a Center has moved across the street to East in 3800 block.
  • A new owner/developer of Hawthorne Apartments would like to do a complete overhaul on the building and build a parking structure nearby for tenants.
  • Madrid Theatre has been making great effort to encourage its patrons to respect the neighborhood-i.e. "No Event Parking" signs for the surrounding area and a security hot-line.
  • Unicorn Theatre is in the process of purchasing the building they are in and expanding adding a small stage for practice, and for classes.
  • The enhanced crosswalks at 39th and at Westport Rd. are almost complete with similar requests for 43rd, Armour, Linwood, and 31st.
  • Major Murray Davis Memorial Park located 40th & Main St. has been re-habilitated with new plantings and design and re-dedicated through a partnership of MainCor and KCMO Parks and Recreation Department.
  • 43rd & Main TIF has a new housing grant program for Southmoreland Neighborhood and streetscape plan for 43rd Street.
  • New owners of Holiday Inn (also own the Best Western) have made great improvements to their property and have a very nice new website.
  • MAX buses are now serving Main Street; we would like to thank the KCATA for the improvements to the street, the sidewalk and new shelters. I would have to say that rider ship is up!
  • Conversations are beginning to explore the creation of a Community Improvement District on Main Street.
  • MainCor is working with KCMO Central Patrol Division Crime Free Multi-Housing program.
  • Ongoing work to help remove graffiti, trash and report crime, if you see something, say something.
    • I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of the MainCor and extending an invitation to all of those in Kansas City that care about what happens on Main Street to attend a monthly coffee (1st Wednesday 8 am), luncheon (3rd Thursday 11:30 am) and/or feel free to stop by or call anytime. MainCor office is at 3215 Main Street, Ste. 200 and phone is 816-753-3820.

January/February 2006 - Volume 11, Issue 1

As Prices at the Pump. . .

. . .remain above $2, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) recognizes the unique opportunity to attract new customers to Metro and MAX service in 2006.

Likewise, KCATA is presented with the daunting challenge of spending $2.2 million more on diesel fuel in 2006 than it did in 2005.

That is why beginning February 1st, KCATA will implement a new and simplified fare structure that passes along a small portion of this increase to customers.

It's simplified because Metro service in Kansas City, MO, Gladstone, Independence, Raytown and Kansas City, Kansas will all have the same cost-only $ 1.25 to ride. Currently, they all have different fares, which can be confusing for customers.

The new price will be the same, whether a customer rides express service during the rush hour or local routes that operate throughout the weekday and on the weekends.

If you need more details on Metro fares and fares payment options, please go to www.kcata.org.

Thanks, and keep riding the bus.

Citizens Police Academy

The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is now accepting applications for the next Citizens Police Academy. The academy is scheduled for March 7, 2006 and continues each Tuesday through May 9, 2006. Class times are from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM each meeting night. There is no fee to take this class. As a citizen you come to class each week and learn how the different departments such as Violent Crimes, Property Crimes Division, Crime Scene Investigators, Traffic Unit, Bomb and Arson, Canine Unit, Tactical Response Teams, the Police Training Academy, and many different units provide police protection. Participants will also be required to take part in one ride-a-long with an officer. Participants should be committed to this ten-week class schedule and must attend at least eight of ten sessions, along with completing the ride-a-long, to receive the course diploma.

The Citizens Academy provides an introduction and overview of the operations of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. The goal is to give the graduate a better understanding and appreciation of the complex nature of police work and create partnership between police and the citizens they serve. Class size is limited. If you are interested, please contact the Academy at 816-482-8260 for an application and other questions you might have.

If you have any questions or comments, please call Officer Diane Soligo at 816-759-6328, or e-mail: Diane.soligo@kcpd.org
