March-April 2004
What Brings You to Main Street?
Many of you participated in meetings that resulted
in the Main St. Corridor Plan. MainCor is now starting
our second year of implementation of the plan. Our Neighborhood
Issues/Corridor Edges Committee decided it was time
to get property owners, business owners, residents from
many Midtown neighborhoods (not just those adjacent
to corridor) and others with information about Midtown
neighborhoods together in one room to hear each others
specific ideas for Main Street.
The result is Celebrate Main Street - A Town Hall Meeting.
Plan to join us on Monday, April 19, 7 p.m. at St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, 40th and Main, in the auditorium.
Childcare will be provided if you make reservations
at 753-3820 so we know how many children to expect.
We will start the evening with a panel made up of neighborhood
leaders as well as a real estate professional and someone
with historic preservation background. They will discuss
the great things going on in the surrounding neighborhoods
and on the Corridor.
Afterward everyone will be given the opportunity to
complete a survey, telling us exactly what kinds of
businesses you want to see on Main Street. What retail
needs do you have? What's missing from Midtown that
you would bring you Main Street?
Please note that the name of this event is "Celebrate
Main Street!" The idea for thistown hall meeting was
neighborhood folks telling us they want a meeting where
only positive information was discussed. We were told
too often meetings turned into complaining sessions.
We are all too aware of the common concerns in Midtown.
Let's discuss all the great things in or area!
Tables will be set up around the room so neighborhood
groups and others will be able to bring printed information
to share.
MainCor is determined to make this a positive experience.
So mark the date, leave your complaints at the door
and join us for a good time talking about the exciting
things coming to Main Street and our neighborhoods.
For more information or to let us know your childcare
needs for that evening, call the MainCor office at 753-3820.

Notice Something New?
Hopefully by now you realize we have changed the look
of the MainCor newsletter, The Corridor. Many of you
have been receiving this newsletter for nearly nine
years! As MainCor has grown over these years, we think
it's time for a new look.
This four-page format will allow us space to provide
more information about topics of interest to you. The
Corridor will now be bi-monthly, so please take time
to mark your calendar for the monthly meetings you might
want to attend.
(The web format will continue to be in 2 columns
for now)
Kudos and Congrats!

Facade Rebate Applications Available
Applications for the Facade Rebate Program are now
available. Unfortunately the total amount available
for the entire city was cut to $125,000. It is granted
on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you think
you may want to participate this year, applications
need to be into our offices by May 1.
The rebate pays 50% up to $10,000 for approved improvements
to the outside of your business including paint, awnings,
etc.
For more information, call MainCor at 753-3820.
Join the Great American Cleanup
Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, the Great American
Cleanup is a nation-wide annual community improvement
program. Each year during March, April and May, volunteers
nationwide pick up litter, clean rivers and hiking
trails, renew parks and community gardens, plant trees
and flowers, hold environmental education classes
and more!
MainCor will be doing our part by involving ACCENT
workers to clean Main Street one Saturday each month
throughout the summer.
In the past MainCor has asked businesses to join
on a specific day for cleanups, but have not had a
great response. However, we are willing to try again!
If you are interested, please call our office at 753-3820.
Keep Kansas City Beautiful provides many of the supplies
like bags and gloves. We just need the commitment
from you and we'll do the rest!
Also, Bridging the Gap and The Surplus Exchange are
planning a computer collection event on June 5. For
more information, check their website at www.bridgingthegap.org.
Information for this article was taken from the Bridging
the Gap website at www.bridgingthegap.org.

Your Vote Counts!
If we learned anything from the 2000 presidential
election, it is that absolutely every vote is important.
So it's time to ask - are you registered to vote?
Are your employees registered? If not, MainCor can
help.
Diane Burnette, MainCor's program manager, is a deputy
registrar and can take care of the details. She is
available at the MainCor office, 3215 Main, most days.
Diane can also arrange to come to your business and
conduct an on-site voter registration. For more information,
call Diane at 753-3820, ext. 202.
Here are the important dates. To be able to vote
in the primary election, you must be registered by
July 7. For the general election, the deadline is
October 6.
